Climate-oriented recovery of Ukraine

The unprovoked and unjustified Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused terrible human suffering and massive destruction of towns and communities. Same time climate change is expected to increase risks and severity of natural disasters in Ukraine, through more intense temperatures as well as rainfall patterns, prolonged heat waves, and water scarcity. In recent years, the number of natural disasters has increased in the region and in many cases, they have been considered as catastrophic, causing fatalities and leading to significant economic losses.

War in Ukraine directly exacerbates people’s vulnerability to all other disasters contributing to the already significant challenges we face in terms of climate change. War undermines the resilience of all, in particular the most vulnerable, and exacerbates inequalities.

The seminar and workshop is looking for new forms of business, R&D and innovation to support the recovery of Ukraine’s society while contributing to the green transition of the country. The seminar and workshop bring together companies and research and development (R&D) organizations.

The workshop part is based on the work of Savonia University of Applied Sciences and Ukrainian partners to create roadmaps for climate-oriented recovery of Ukraine. They will develop research-and-innovation projects based on pre-defined mission areas for climate actions in agriculture sector, energy sector and municipality services sector. The cooperation has been financed by EIT Climate-KIC (supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology).

Savonia University of Applied Sciences and Developing Markets Platform Business Finland supports companies’ efforts to find suitable networks in Ukraine and funding channels.
